Introduction To Disaster Concepts

đź’ˇ FACT #03 Over 90% of deaths caused by natural disasters occur in poor countries.

Poor have more difficulty recovering
-Less money saved up if crops are destroyed
-Cannot afford to buy food
-Become vulnerable to disease

IMPACTS OF DISASTER

-Loss of lives

-Injuries and diseases

-Mental, social, physical effects

-Damage to properties

-Economic and environmental degradation

How well the impact of a disaster event is absorbed has much to do with the intensity of the impact and the level of preparedness and resilience of the subject impacted. #BeAware

Introduction To different Types of Hazard

Natural disasters are the disasters caused by natural forces whereas man made disasters are caused by activities of human beings.

What is a Natural Disaster

A natural disaster is a disaster caused by nature, and men have no control over them. Earthquakes, tsunamis, floods, landslides, hurricanes, wildfires, droughts, volcanic eruptions are some examples of natural disasters. Such disasters cause massive loss of life, property, and many other miseries.

What is a Man Made Disaster

A man made disaster is a disaster caused by human beings. Some examples of man made disasters include hazardous material spills, explosions, chemical or biological attacks, nuclear blasts, traffic collisions such as train accidents, plane crashes, etc. Most of these disasters are in the form accidents (except attacks) and cause deaths, injuries, and loss of property.

TIDAL WAVE ❌ TSUNAMI

đź’ˇFACT #01; TIDAL WAVE AND TSUNAMI ARE TWO DIFFERENT THINGS (WHUT? ACTUALLY, YEAH)

Although both are sea waves, a tsunami and a tidal wave are two different and unrelated phenomena. A tidal wave is a shallow water wave caused by the gravitational interactions between the Sun, Moon, and Earth. A tsunami is an ocean wave triggered by large earthquakes that occur near or under the ocean, volcanic eruptions, submarine landslides, or by onshore landslides in which large volumes of debris fall into the water.

PHASES OF EARTHQUAKE DRILL

Earthquake drills and exercises are an extremely important part for our preparedness plan. It will help us, though not prevent, but to mitigate the situation

1. ALARM– Bell rings for 1 minute

2. RESPONSE– Perform duck, cover, and hold

3. EVACUATION– Occupants evacuate following pre-determined routes

4. ASSEMBLY– Evacuates must be grouped

5. HEAD COUNT– All evacuees should be accounted

6. EVALUATION– Identify problems encountered during the drill

Be Alert. Be Aware.

Here’s a little tip from 8list.ph that you might wanna take note!

đź’ˇFACT #02: Having a survival kit can sure make life a lot easier during a survival situation. While no kit can ever replace good old fashion knowledge and training, having one is an essential part of the preparedness equation.
